Following the recent demise of my iPhone 3GS after only one year and 25 days of use, I
decided to get a robust case to rectify a major design flaw in Apple’s little
darling. iPhone’s may be beautiful technical marvels but the dock connector at
the base is a major liability.
As I recently discovered to my cost, the dock connector port allows water to track into the heart of the machine via capillary action. It also get’s gummed up with dust and dirt. As a result, my iPhone 3GS was killed by corrosion after only a year of entirely normal use. I suspect that mine was not the only iPhone to have suffered this fate….
My original iPhone was wrapped in a Belkin resin case which I regarded as perfectly adequate, except that it left the dock connector open to the elements. On any other phone this would not be a problem, except, as Apple keeps reminding us, the iPhone is anything but ordinary. So, when my replacement phone arrived from Apple I decided to get something a little more robust: a Proporta Alu-Leather flip-style case.
The case is really rather lovely and works a treat. First and foremost it provides snug protection for the iPhone. I’m quite certain that you could routinely drop the phone without any risk of harm. It will certainly protect it as you slide it into and out of you pocket, bag or purse. The case also has a secret weapon: a thin sheet of aircraft grade aluminium hidden inside the ‘flip’ to protect the screen from being punctured or scratched.
The flip part of the case is secured with a magnetic ‘C’ clasp that keeps the whole kaboodle tightly closed. Crucially, this magnetic clasp covers the dock port, thus keeping raindrops and (hopefully) dust out of the port should you carry your iPhone in your back pocket as I do. If you’re doubly paranoid, like me, you can also buy a plug to cover the docking port completely.
In short, a lovely case that will keep you phone in good nick for years to come. It also looks good with its tartan lining and silvery stitching.
