Apple’s various iPods are wolves in sheep’s clothing. They are capable of producing wonderful sound quality but end up sounding like a bee trapped in a jar because of the dreadful earphones they come bundled with. It’s hardly surprising, therefore, that there’s a thriving market in iPod earphones. You can spend anywhere between £10 and £500 on earphones and even the cheapest will be better than Apple’s originals. If you’re a casual user who loves music and doesn’t want to be a mugger’s target then the Sennheiser CX400 is hard to beat. At around £40 they are dramatically better than Apple’s originals and won’t break the bank. It takes several weeks for the Sennheiser’s to really shine. They definitely need ‘running in’ but once they are, the sound quality is extremely good. Deep bass notes sounds wonderfully growly and vocals are beautifully crisp. They also passed the all important “girlfriend test” where the said girl reluctantly tries them out – are then goes on to thieve them at every opportunity. In short: A worthy upgrade for all iPods and iPhones. |
