Solio solar charger review Print

Modern life is an energy hungry business – especially if you’re a gadget fiend who loves the great outdoors. Mobile phones, GPSs, iPods, two-way radios and cameras all consume loads of energy and need regular re-charging. The Solio, made by Better Energy Systems, could be the answer to our prayers.

The Solio allows all of these devices to be charged up using only the energy of the sun. The thing that sets it apart from other solar chargers is its internal battery, which stores a lot of energy and ensures that it’s on tap whenever you need it. In practice, this means you can leave it charging in the sun ready to re-charge your devices whenever you need to. At home you can leave it in a window. If you’re out walking, cycling, or even paragliding for a few days you can strap it on the outside of your pack and leave it to charge ready for use.

When not in use it folds away into a tiny rock-hard case and weighs only 165g. ‘Tips” that connect it to virtually any GPS, PDA and mobile phone cost about £7 each, as does a female cigarette lighter adapter, which allows you to charge most radios and pretty much everything else. The manufacturer claims it takes about 8-10 hours of sun to re-charge a phone or a radio, which sounds about right even in Britain’s dismal climate. I’ve found that it provides enough juice to keep all of my essential gadgets fully charged pretty much all of the time. Available for £49.99. http://www.solio.com
