Lorraine Elston could hardly believe what she was hearing from the stranger on the phone.
Still reeling from the shock that Wayne Newton the father of her two children had dumped her for the American singer Anastacia, she was now being asked to deal with another bombshell.
“I’m sorry Lorraine,” said Siobhan Chadd down the phone, “but I was having an affair with Wayne for 13 years. It’s not the first time he has cheated on you. I thought you should know.”
It was the kind of double heartache that would flatten the strongest woman but amazingly Lorraine, 44, says she has drawn strength from learning the full truth about her former partner of 13 years.
Siobhan, 40, a health and safety administrator from south London, phoned Lorraine after reading her heartbreaking story on Newsmonster.
Lorraine had told how Wayne Newton, 39, the father of their two children Corey, 10 and three-year-old Max, had left the family home in Beckenham, Kent to be with the American superstar after falling for her while working as her minder.
“Now I know once and for all that I’m better off without Wayne,” says Lorraine.
“Siobhan didn’t even know about me and the children all the time Wayne was having an affair with her.
“He lied to her for 13 years and pretended he was a single man. I find it hard to believe that he could see someone for that long and not once mention me and particularly the children. I just hope Anastacia knows what she is letting herself in for.”
Siobhan and Lorraine have become friends since that phone call and have supported each other during what has been a difficult time for both of them.
“If I had known about Lorraine and the children I would have never gone anywhere near Wayne,” says Siobhan.
“But the truth is I always believed he was a single man who travelled around the world minding stars.
“That is how he was able to get away with it. Because of his job he could always pretend he was somewhere else and I guess when you fall for someone you tend to believe what you want to believe.”
Siobhan recalls how during what she calls a 13-year “on-off” affair with the muscular minder he invited her to top London hotels where he laid on the Champagne treatment in five star suites.
And he got her tickets to concerts of stars he was minding including Simply Red and Toni Braxton.
Newton even met Siobhan’s mum and her best friends socially.
“They all thought he was a great bloke,” recalls Siobhan.
“They thought he was a caring and charming, as I did.”
When Newton was working abroad he kept in contact with romantic calls and Siobhan sent him a string of birthday, Valentine and Christmas cards to his parents address over the years.
But behind her back he was a family man who always went home to Lorraine and their two children.
“He used to tell me he had a job to go on or he had to go abroad because of work, “ says Siobhan.
“To think I once told him I would trust him with my life,” says Siobhan.
“Now I don’t believe a word he says.
“In 13 years the mask never slipped once. It’s hard to believe.
“I had no idea he was effectively married, let alone that he had two children and a family home just a few miles away from where we would meet up.
“I had often hoped that one day Wayne and I would maybe get married but he always put his job first. Or at least that is what he always said.
“He travelled the world with his work minding one star or another and I would only get to see him when he was back in London.
“His job and all the travel helped him keep Lorraine and the children a secret from me – and me a secret from them.
“I can still hardly believe he shared a family home with Lorraine for 13 years. That is how long I have been seeing him.
“I fell for all his lies hook line and sinker. I have been a fool. He has used me and I would like Anastacia to know what a liar he has been.
“What hurts the most is that I thought we were good friends over the years. We were there for one another but we were also lovers. But it wasn’t all about sex. We were close and we talked a lot.
“Then one day you find out this guy you think the world of is not only married but has kids.
“I don’t know how he could have kept that from me for so long. He is a total fraud. I never want to see him or speak to him again.
“But it is Lorraine I feel sorry for. I would never have even looked at Wayne if I’d known about her.”
Last month (Sept) Lorraine revealed how she had found secret emails between Newton and the multi-million album singer who had a successful lumpectomy in 2003 after discovering she had breast cancer.
She confronted him over his relationship with the singer and he finally admitted he was seeing her.
Now Anastacia and Newton have revealed they are engaged to be married.
“I was watching television last month (Sept) when I heard about Lorraine’s story,” recalls Siobhan.
“I had heard from Wayne in March when he phoned me to say there was a story in the papers about him and Anastacia.
“He said it was all lies and that Lorraine wasn’t his partner and that he didn’t have any children.
“I believed him. But when I saw the TV advert I realised Lorraine really must be real and began to understand for the first time that he had been lying to me.
“I read the story the next day and realised it was all true and that he had lied and lied to me for so many years.
“In a way it was closure for me because by then I knew that my casual relationship with Wayne wasn’t ever going to lead anywhere.
“And after all this I’m glad it hasn’t.
“I immediately looked up Lorraine’s phone number and rang her to tell her I felt for her and that she didn’t deserve what had happened.
“We got chatting and I realised she needed to talk. Tentatively I told her I knew Wayne and then I told her the truth. I felt she deserved to know. We chatted for ages and there is no animosity between us at all.
“I emailed Wayne to ask him to explain himself.
“I wrote: ‘I phoned and spoke to Lorraine yesterday. I needed to know for sure as it doesn’t seem quite real and I’m trying to make sense of how someone I respected and trusted could have lied to me for so long.
‘Anyway I would like to give you the chance to explain why you lied to me all those years Wayne.’
In another email Siobhan wrote: ‘Why lie for 13 years Wayne? What purpose has it served? What has it achieved? What have you gained? I wish you luck and happiness in your new life, but think very carefully before you lie and deceive again.’
In reply Newton wrote: ‘Thanks, none of my good friends have judged me but since you have, you can’t be a friend, thank you!’
“The main reason I am telling my story is because of the way Wayne has dealt with all of this,” sats Siobhan.
“It is not just the lies. He has been found out and he has been pretty awful about it. There has been no apology.”
Lorraine said: “It may sound strange but I am glad Siobhan got in touch with me.
“The fact that Wayne cheated on me with her long before he met Anastacia has helped me come to terms with what has happened.
“I now realise Wayne is totally out for himself. He has a seen a chance at getting the high life and he has gone for it.
“In order to get it he has left his children, me and Siobhan. He hasn’t considered anyone’s feelings other than his own.
“I really do wonder what he has told Anastacia about Siobhan.
“He lied to us both for 13 years. If I was thinking of marrying a man I would find a past like that a bit of a problem.
“I hope Anastacia thinks long and hard and takes her time before marrying Wayne. He is liar.”
It was so different when Siobhan met Newton in the early 90s when he was a bouncer at trendy London club Browns – a top celebrity haunt.
Newton would let Siobhan and her friends go into the VIP area and before long they became an item.
By then he was already living with Lorraine.
What particularly impressed Siobhan at the time was that Newton treated her as an equal.
Siobhan was born with her lower right arm missing and was aware that some men found that off putting.
“Wayne was a good talker and a good listener and he was interested in me despite my arm.
“It was never an issue with him. We grew close but even back in those days his work came first so everything was on a casual basis.
“Of course I hoped for more but I think over the years I had begun to realise it wasn’t going to happen.
“There were times when I wouldn’t hear from him for six months or maybe a year and I would be involved with someone else.
“Then Wayne would be back in town again – or at least that is what he told me – and I would see him.
“I think it would be best described as an on off romance. But if I had known he was effectively married, I would have stayed well away.
One of the last times I saw him was in August last year (2005).
I was a bit tipsy after having a few drinks with my mum and I rang him up.
“He was at a very posh London hotel – One Aldwych – where he was minding Anastacia.
“He asked me to come over and we spent the night together.
“Yes it was wonderful because it was a beautiful hotel and Wayne is very charming.
“But by then I realised I had to move on and that Wayne would never commit to me.
“There were other times when I spent the night with him at Claridges.
“But afterwards it was always bitter sweet.
“I guess for years I believed what I wanted to believe and I must say looking back it seems strange that he always had to be somewhere else.
“I always accepted it was because of his job but it never felt really quite right.
“He told me that there had been other women over the years while he was on the road but he never mentioned Lorraine or the children.
“My best friend Fay and I used to joke that one day we would find out that he was either gay or married. How does the saying go….many a true word spoken in jest?
“By the time I found out about Lorraine I was beginning to distance myself from him because I knew I wasn’t doing myself any favours. I knew I had to move on.
“I think I would advise Anastacia to take her time with him. She has been through enough already and she doesn’t need any more heartache.
“My honest feeling is that Wayne is not the kind of man who will enjoy playing second fiddle to anyone for long.
