BRITISH mum Lorraine Elston has revealed how American singer Anastacia wanted her two children to fly to Mexico to attend her wedding and she told her: “No way!”
Heartbroken Lorraine, 44, put her foot down after her former fiancé Wayne Newton, dumped her last year (2006) for the singer.
Newton, 39, who met Anastacia, 38, while working as her bodyguard, married the pop queen in a lavish beach ceremony in Huatulco, Mexico, on April 21.
“Can you believe it?” said Lorraine, a patents administrator from Beckenham, Kent.
“First he runs off and leaves me for a rich superstar and then he asks if the kids can go to the wedding to make everything alright.
“I’m sure that would have made him and Anastacia feel a lot better about what they were doing but it would have been so bad and confusing for the kids.
“I told them: ‘Over my dead body.’”
Lorraine was engaged to Newton for 10 years of their 13-year relationship and they have two boys, Corey, 10, and Max, three.
She revealed Newton made the wedding request before a High Court hearing in London over his access rights to the two boys. He said he and Anastacia would both like the boys to be there.
Lorraine has custody of the boys and she said Newton soon backed down when she refused point blank.
“He even told the court that he and Anastacia realised it would be a bad idea too – but only after privately asking me for my permission first.
“There is no way Corey is ready to meet Anastacia yet.
“I told Wayne it was not a good idea to take Corey out of school for the wedding and also that he was upset about what had happened because he had been expecting to see Wayne marry me.”
Lorraine revealed how she broke down in tears on her way to work when she heard about the wedding.
“I knew they were getting married but when it happened it hurt so much,” she said.
“Since he left last year (2006) I have slowly been piecing my life together. But that article brought back all the pain.”
Lorraine first revealed last October how Newton had dumped her for the singer.
She then faced fresh heartache in November when Siobhan Chadd, 40, a health and safety administrator from south London, came forward to reveal she had been having an affair with Newton throughout his relationship with Lorraine.
Both women have now become firm friends.
Lorraine added: “The thing that annoyed me most about the Hello article was a quote from Anastacia in which she said: ‘I’m excited to be involved with his children.’ “That is a lie. She has never met Corey and Max. Not once.
“I’m not saying she will never meet them. I don’t want to stop Wayne being a part of their lives, but I will be the one who decides when the time is right. I am their mother after all.
“There are some interesting quotes in that article about how they have such ‘a big career’ and how they want to be ‘a little bit selfish’.
“It is obvious to me that they don’t really want the hard work of bringing up kids - I will do that and am happy to do it – they just want to see them now and again to have some fun with them. I’m sorry but it doesn’t work like that.”
Lorraine also has a word of warning for the pop singer.
“I noticed their first dance at the reception was to For You by Kenny Lattimore and that Anastacia said the words to the song ‘really represented what we feel our marriage represents.’
“Well girl, that used my song too when I was with Wayne. I’m not trying to be hurtful but you notice things like that.”
Lorraine said the wedding had helped bring her closer to her children, particularly Corey, who has been left confused by the absence of his father.
“Max is too young to understand what has been going on but Corey understands,” she said.
“I had to show him the wedding pictures because his school friends will see them and he has to be prepared.
“When he looked at them and read the story he just gave me a big hug and said: ‘You’re the best mum in the world.’ I wouldn’t swap that for anything.
“I’ve moved on since Wayne left am getting on with my life for my own sake and for the children’s sake.
“I still find it difficult to believe he has swapped his life as a father and the joy of watching his boys grow up for the life he now has.
“I’m sure on the surface it looks like every man’s dream to marry someone rich and famous like that.
“But I would never swap my boys for anything. They mean the world to me.”
